WRIST AND FOREARM PAIN

Scope of Practice

As your massage therapist, it is out of my scope of practice to diagnose or prescribe to you during our treatment sessions. I have helped many of my clients by avoiding expensive surgeries that can worsen their pain and lead down an endless road of medications that can cause other adverse issues.

One of the leading causes of wrist and forearm pain is what is often called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

If your doctor has discussed with you that you may be at the beginning stages or experiencing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, we can help. When we catch Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in the early stages, we can often prevent you from a future surgery and manage your pain.

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a common condition that often results in pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and arm. There are many causes like typing on a computer, lifting heavy things at work, painting, weight lifting, and more. The condition occurs when one of the major nerves to the hand, the median nerve, is squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist. Early intervention is vital to help prevent possible surgery in the future.

Massage therapy can help prevent Carpal tunnel syndrome by promoting circulation, relieving inflammation, aiding and helping to remove metabolic residues, and soothing irritated muscles and tendons.

Most of us tend to think that people who work with computers are prone to carpal tunnel. Carpal tunnel can be caused by using power tools that vibrate, forceful or repetitive hand or wrist movements (particularly in a cold environment),  or movements that concentrate pressure and motion at one part of the hand or wrist. Other causes may be working with small instruments such as dentistry, repetitive lifting of heavy items (including weight lifting), painting, or clenching the steering wheel while driving for long periods of time. Sports that require repetitive wrist movements, such as tennis, golf, hockey, and baseball can also cause carpal tunnel.
